King David is so old he could only be warm when his servants placed the beautiful Abishag the Shunammite in his arms, yet he knew her not. Adonijah was never disciplined by David. He stole Joab and Abiathar and others from David's side during his self-exalting coronation. Nathan and Bathsheba tell David, and he makes Solomon king according to his promise. Solomon decides not to put Adonijah to death, so long as no further wickedness is found in him.

David delivers his parting advice to Solomon: keep the Law of Moses so he never lacks a man on the throne of Israel, execute Joab and Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjaminite, and to deal loyally to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite and let them eat at the king's table. David was buried in the city of David after a 40 year reign (7 in Hebron, 33 in Israel). Adonijah asked via Bathsheba for Abishag the Shunammite as wife, and Solomon had Benaiah the son of Jehoiada execute him. He also sent Benaiah after Joab, who had clung to the horns of the altar, and Shimei. He emphasized the judgment upon their sins and the establishment of the blessing of his throne. Benaiah was now commander of the army, and Zadok the priest was priest.
